Date Issued: January 20, 2025

Type of Action: Executive Memorandum

Title: Return to In-Person Work

Details: On his first day in office, President Trump issued an executive memorandum that directs the heads of all departments and agencies in the executive branch of government to take steps to terminate remote work arrangements and require employees to work in-person.

Implications for Corporate and Labor and Employment Clients:

While President Trump’s authority on this issue only extends to federal employees, this memorandum will likely impact the private sector. It is expected that many federal employees who are forced to return to in-person work may leave the federal workforce and seek private sector employment that offers a more generous work from home policy. While private sector employers should be on the lookout for federal employees that are eager to make a move, President Trump’s decision to bring federal employees back to the office is in line with the national trend of private employers implementing return to work policies.
