Michael W. Maddin is Named Jewish Historical Society of Michigan President

At a recent meeting of the Board of Directors of the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan, Michael W. Maddin was elected President.  Maddin, a founder and President Emeritus of Maddin, Hauser, Roth & Heller, P.C., is the 22nd president of the organization, founded in 1959 with a mission to educate, share, and promote the awareness of the contributions of the Jews of Michigan.

Maddin has been an active supporter and participant in JHSM activities since receiving the Leonard N. Simons History Award in 1999. He received this award for his focus on the preservation of Detroit’s Jewish history, in particular, his role as chair of the committee to sponsor a volume of the history of Detroit area Jewry. In 2003, Maddin also received the Fred M. Butzel Memorial Award for Distinguished Community Service. He has served as a member of the JHSM Advisory Board and, in 2013 was elected to the JHSM Board of Directors as a Vice President. He and his wife Donna are Heritage Council members and are the Co-Chairs of the upcoming Cruise & Schmooze: A Detroit River Cruise (July 23, 2014). Maddin has also donated yearbooks to the JHSM Yearbook Collection and has participated in J-Cycle, an educational bicycle tour of Detroit (August 24, 2014) presented by JHSM, Hillel Metro Detroit, the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue and the Reconstructionist Congregation of Detroit.

Maddin’s career as a community leader is impressive. He has served as Chairman of The Jewish Fund, U of M Hillel Board of Trustees, Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit’s Endowment Fund, and Allied Jewish Campaign. He has also served as President of United Jewish Foundation, Fresh Air Society, and Franklin Hills Country Club. He has chaired numerous projects and campaigns including United Jewish Foundation 100th Anniversary and the recently launched Fresh Air Society’s Tamarack Memories Project.The Jewish Historical Society of Michigan conducts tours, events, and programs and publishes Michigan Jewish History, an annual journal sent to members, academic programs, libraries and synagogues. Among the organization’s most successful programs are its various tours of historic Jewish Michigan, primarily various explorations of the Detroit area, including the award-winning Settlers to Citizens Youth Tours, offered to area religious schools at no charge.
