Complex Litigation and Risk Advisory, Employment and Workforce Management

MARIEL G. NEWHOUSE is an associate who focuses her practice on helping employers prevent and resolve costly and disruptive employment law claims. She recognizes that while a company’s workforce can be its most valuable asset, it takes preparation, foresight, and commitment to prevent it from becoming the source of liability. With an emphasis on actionable advice and workable employment policies and practices, Mariel serves as a valuable resource for employers across a wide range of industries.

A former Maddin Hauser summer associate, Mariel works collaboratively with employers and their management and human resources professionals to develop and implement compliant hiring and employment policies and training programs, draft employee handbooks, prepare employment agreements, and respond to administrative actions and investigations, including matters before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and state-level equivalents.

Mariel knows the employment law landscape is constantly in flux and that her clients must account for and comply with scores of intersecting laws, regulations, and ordinances at the federal, state, and local levels. She also knows her clients count on her to keep them abreast of their evolving legal obligations, which is why she is exceptionally diligent about staying ahead of every new development and advising her clients accordingly. Mariel’s responsiveness and accessibility, combined with her clear counsel, allow her clients to quickly and confidently adapt to changes in the law and minimize the likelihood of lawsuits or non-compliance.

While earning her law degree at Michigan State University College of Law, where she graduated magna cum laude, Mariel wrote as a staff editor and notes editor for the Michigan State Law Review. She also served as the ADR director for the Student Board of Advocates from 2020-2021 and competed on the Arbitration and Moot Court teams. Committed to serving others, Mariel volunteered as a student clinician for the Chance at Childhood Clinic, earning her Child Advocacy Certificate in 2020. She was awarded the Jurisprudence Award in Civil Procedure, Advocacy, and the Chance at Childhood Clinic.
