Maddin on the Move – Q&A Series With Jordan Segal

06.25.24

With Maddin Hauser moving offices for the first time in 38 years, and on the cusp of the firm’s 100th anniversary, our attorneys reflect on our proud history, their professional journeys, and what the future holds for the firm and its clients.

Today, we chat with Jordan Segal, a shareholder in the firm’s Real Estate, Corporate, and Employment Practice Groups, who represents clients in a wide range of business and employment matters.

Q: Tell me about your practice and how long you’ve been with Maddin Hauser. What attracted you to the firm, and what do you value or appreciate most about working at MH?

A: I am a full-service real estate and business attorney, meaning I draft the paper for pretty much any type of agreement a company can engage in: incorporation, investment, operations, supply-chain, real estate acquisition, leasing and disposition; you name it. I love the variety and challenges that come with what I do, as well as the creativity involved in structuring deals to match the client’s specific objectives or the surrounding legal or practical circumstances.

I joined Maddin Hauser in early 2021, and it was one of the best career decisions I have ever made. It is so apparent how much the partners care about each and every person who works here – attorneys and staff alike. I think that comes from recognizing that the firm’s success is a product of everyone’s collective talents and efforts. In turn, that fosters an atmosphere of mutual respect and collegiality.

Q: The firm launched an important initiative in 2023, The Maddin Hauser Way, which clearly defines everyone’s shared values and practices that are the foundation of the firm’s culture. Recognizing that all of them are vital, is there one that has more greatly influenced or impacted your practice?

A: As a transactional attorney, I think “Find a Way” really speaks to the essence of my job. I strive to be a deal-maker, not a deal-breaker, always looking to find a way to get all parties to “yes.” That frequently means considering the other side’s position (and why they are taking that position) and thinking of out-of-the-box solutions to overcome obstacles and get a deal across the finish line

Q: The office move is coming up quickly. What aspect of this move are you most excited about?

A: The amenities and technology in the new space are remarkable and cutting-edge! It has a complete tech package that includes sound suppression (a very cool technology) and a sophisticated IT suite that will allow us to provide considerable additional value to our clients.

Q: Maddin Hauser will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year. If you had a crystal ball, what would you see in the firm’s future?

A: I see nothing but great things in our future. We will continue to provide impressive, sophisticated coastal-elite quality work to our clients at Midwestern billing rates, and our growth model is aggressive and impressive, both internally and through acquisition. As to that last point, our younger associates are the cream of the crop, contributing their talents, enthusiasm, and different perspectives to the fabric of the firm.

Maddin Hauser is poised to be a true 21st-century firm, not only in Michigan but regionally, nationally, and internationally! A new, modernized office space is just the first step in this evolution, and I believe we will continue to grow and thrive while maintaining our adherence to the fundamental values that made the firm great in the first place.
