Charles M. Lax Recognized as Leader in the Law by Michigan Lawyers Weekly

Maddin Hauser is pleased to announce that Charles M. Lax has been recognized among Michigan Lawyers Weekly’s Leaders in the Law for 2018.

Leaders in the Law are honored for their significant legal accomplishments and contributions, their leadership in improving the Michigan justice system, their efforts to seek improvements in the legal and local community and the example they set for other lawyers.

The announcement was made by the firm’s President and CEO, Steven D. Sallen. “Chuck continuously contributes to our firm and to the legal community through tax law-related educational programs, speaking engagements and publications, and through his ongoing efforts to improve tax laws. We’re pleased to congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition,” said Sallen.

A shareholder of the firm, Lax practices primarily in the areas of employee benefits, taxation, corporate law and mergers and acquisitions. He has extensive experience in representing clients in tax controversy matters before the Internal Revenue Service and Tax Court of the United States.

Lax has written numerous articles that have been published in legal and public accounting journals. He also lectures extensively on qualified retirement plans, ethics, Circular 230, practice before the IRS, and other tax topics for the Michigan Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE), Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants, American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA) and other professional groups. For the past 26 years, Lax has organized, hosted and presented at Maddin Hauser’s yearly Tax Symposium, a half-day educational seminar designed to provide accountants and tax professionals with updated, relevant tax law information.

Lax serves as an Emeritus member of the IRS Great Lakes Tax Exempt/Government Entities Council. He previously served as the Chairman of both the State Bar of Michigan Section of Taxation and Section of Taxation Employee Benefits Committee, on the IRS Regional Council Bar Advisory Group-Central Region, as ASPPA Vice Chairman for Regional Conferences, as Co-Chairman of the ASPPA Annual Conference and as Co-Chair of the ASPPA Great Lakes Benefits Conference.

Selected by his peers for inclusion in the annual edition of Best Lawyers in America® annually since 2006 in the area of Employee Benefits (ERISA) Law, Lax was also recognized in 2011, 2016 and 2018 as the “Detroit Lawyer of the Year” in employee benefits law. Lax has also been recognized by Chambers USA, selected for inclusion in the Michigan edition of Super Lawyers® from 2006-2017 (one of the top 100 lawyers in the State of Michigan for 2008), recognized as a Michigan Leading Lawyer and named as a Top Lawyer by DBusiness Magazine.

Lax serves as an Executive Committee Member of the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization (BBYO) Michigan Region Commission and as Co-Chair of the Alumni Committee of BBYO Michigan Region Commission.
